This volume includes22 original papers on the subject "Universe of Knowledge:
It's Development and Structure", written by prominent and well known 
authors in the field of Library and Information Science. The papers included in
the four sections broadly cover Universe of Knowledge, curriculum  and
criteria of relevance; objectives, intellectual basis and inter-disciplinary
studies; contents of the paper Universe of Knowledge and strategies,
methodology, and instruction and pooling of expertise. The objectives,
methodology and content of Universe of Knowledge appended to this volume under
the heading 'recommendations' will serve as model for L. I. S. Departments in
the country and elseware to teach the subject in M. L. I. Sc. programmes. The
editors sincerely hope that this volume be of help to teachers of L. I. S. who
handle the subject and for  the students to understand the scope,
methodology and well defined areas which go into the subject. It is true to
state that not much literature has been published on the subject and this
publication it is believed, will to a long way in meeting the requirements of L.
I. S. teaching and student community and serve as an important contribution to
the field of 'Universe of Knowledge.

Prof. A. A. N. Raju is formerly Head, Department of Library and Information Science and Dean, Faculty of social Sciences, Osmania University, Hyderabad -500 007.
Prof. Raju published seventy research papers in English and Seventy articles in Telugu in LIS professional journals. He authored and edited Twenty books covering various facets of LIS both in English and Telugu. His earlier books on library classification include DC, UDC and CC; A Study in Comparison (Delhi Ajanta,1984); Universal Decimal Classification (IME, 1991):( Chennai, TR Publications1991); Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC-20): Theory and Practice; A Self Instructional Manual Chennai, TR Publications 1995). and colon Classification: Theory and Practice: A Self Instructional Manual (New Delhi, Ess Ess Publications, 2001)
Prof. Raju has been very actively associated with the professional activities, both at local and national levels. He is Life Member of ILA,IASLIC, ALSD, IATLIS,and APLA He was Vice-President of ILA (1986-87), IASLIC(1998-89 and 1992-93), President IATLIS(1996--98) and presently Vico President, of Andhra Pradesh Library Association APLA, Vijayawada. He was member of U.G.C. Panel on Library Science for two consecutive terms (1991-93 and 1994-96). Recipient of IATLIS-Motiwale Best Teacher Award for 1995.and UGC Emeritus Fellowhip (1999-2001)

Dr. N. Laxman  Rao. is presently working as Professor in the Department
of Library and Information Science, Osmania University, Hyderabad. He did M.
Lib. Sc. form Banaras Hindu University and M. Sc. in Information Management form
the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom. He obtained Ph. D. in Library and
Information Science from Osmania University. Earlier, he served as Head and 
also Chairman. Board of Studies in Library and Information Science, O. U. He is
life member of IASLIC, ILA, IATLIS, SIS, AGLIS, ALSD and APLA and was Vice
President of IASLIC. He is associated with distance education programmes of both
Indira Gandhi National Open University and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University as
Editor, Counselor and Course Writer.


Presently he is an Academic Advisor to Educational Consultant India Ltd. (Ed.
CIL), the British University, India Consortium (VUIC).
