As the range and
extent of information increase so do the problems of its identification and
retrieval. With the invasion of computers and information technologies the
tasks of identifying, locating and disseminating the required information have
undergone drastically. The ever changing environment of Information and
Communication Technologies (ICT) is compelling librarians and information
professionals to analyze their strategies so that they can play a vital role in
the emerging global knowledge society. As the technology continues to change
rapidly, undermining the ability of people to develop a reliable and
interchangeable approach to their work.
An attempt
has been through this edition for appraising the library and information
professionals in order to develop their level of competency and understanding
the changes in the technology so that they can articulate for adopting the same
for bringing improvement in the services of library and information
centers.
N.R. Satyanarayana (b.1947) was educated at the universities of Andhra, Osmania,
Banaras, Lucknow and at the college of Librarianship, Wales, Aberystwth (U.K.).
He worked in the universities of Lucknow for more than thirty five years and
held the position of Professor and Head of the Department of Library and
Information Science. Subsequently, he joined Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar
Univaersity, Lucknow as Professor and held the positions of Head, the
Department of Library and Information Science, and Dean, School for Information
Sciences and Technology.
More than
twenty five scholars were awarded Ph. D. under his supervision. He has written
eight books and contributed more than seventy five research articles in
different professional journals and presented/published papers in many national
and international conferences, and also organized several conferences and
seminars. He edited “Lucknow Librarian” a quarterly journal of U.P. Library
Association, for more than two decades.
He is an
active member of many professional societies and has held many responsible
positions including President, Uttar Pradesh Library Association, Lucknow
Chapter and was Senior- Vice- President, Indian Association of Special
Libraries and Information Centers (IASLIC) from 2002-04 and2004-06. He is now
member of its Governing Body. The Governor of Uttar Pradesh nominated him as
‘Member, Uttar Pradesh State Library Council’ under the provisions of Uttar
Pradesh Public Library Act, 2006 since its inception.
For his
contribution in the field of Library and Information Science, he was honoured
with the ‘IATLIS-MOTIWALE Best Teacher Award’ by the Association of Teachers of
Library and Information Science (IATLIS) in the year 2008; and “Best Teacher
Award for the year 2011” by the Indian Association of Special Libraries and
Information Centers (IASLIC), and was conferred on him at its Annual Conference
held at Pondicherry University in December 2012.
He is now
associated with the Integral University, as Senior Professor in the Department
of Library and Information Science.
Abdul Mannan
Khan (b.1977) was educated at Aligarh Muslim
University and has obtained Ph.D. Degree in Library and Information Science. He
was awarded Kaula-Basheeruddin Medal in his MLIS programme. He is at present
working as the Librarian in-charge, Integral University, Lucknow. He is also
actively involved in teaching and guiding research.
He has been a
keen researcher and prolific writer and published two books and more than 20
research papers in journals of repute in India as well as international
journals. His areas of interest are Collection Development, Organization and
Development of Institutional Repositories, Information Technology Applications
in Libraries.
