In the recent times there has been a paradigm shift in the generation,
processing, dissemination and utilization of information. The shift has
primarily been influenced by the developments in the field of computer and
communication technology. Because of this library and information professionals
are on constant pressure to modernize their libraries and upgrade their
professional skills. Organizations cannot really recruit new professionals for
every specialization that emerge, and thus the existing staff has to be trained
through effective staff development programmers. The present book endeavors to
discuss the challenges brought out by the technology. competencies required, and
strategies to train manpower, ways to develop effective programmers and various
efforts in this direction in a cohesive manner. the approach has been that of
documenting the theories, processes and opinions of experts in the field of
staff training and development. the aim is to highlight important issues before
us to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The book has 14 chapters
organized into three sections, viz. I. LIS Training and Development, II. LIS
Curricular Issue, and III. Continuing Education and research. The book is first
of its kind in India.

Index


Dr. Sanjaya Mishra is Lecturer at STRIDE, Indira Gandhi National Open
University, New Delhi. He  holds a Ph. D. degree in Library and Information
Science and Master degree in Distance Education. A prolific writer on
professional issues, Dr Mishra has about 50 articles published in reputed
journals. He received the 'Best Paper Award' in the IFLA conference in 1992 for
his paper entitled "Library and Information serviecs for Disabled Individuals".
As UGC-JRF qualified scholar in the University of Delhi he completed M. Phil.
degree. He has written two books: Careers in Library and Information Science
(1994) (Cop-author) and Career Development  Handbook for Library and
information Professionals (1996). He is a life member of various professional
bodies including ILA, IASLIC, ISKO, and IDEA. He served as a Council Member of
ILA during 1996-1998 Currently he is also the Book Review Editor of Indian
Journal of Open Learning Published by IGNOU


Sunil Kumar is Senior Lecturer of Library Science at SCERT, New Delhi. He has
completed MA (Pol. Sc.) and MLISc from University of Delhi. A UGC-NET qualified
professional, Sh. Sunil Kumar has wide range of experience in different
libraries including Delhi Adminsitration, National Institute of Entrepreneurship
and Small Business Development, and jawaharlal  Nehru University, prior to
his present assignment. He is highly active in professional circle with more
than 19 papers to his credit. He is a life member of ILA. He regularly conducts
training programmes for School Librarians in Delhi.
