Academic Library Development includes scholarly articles that provide

information explosion. the quality of teaching -learning process certainly
depends on the speed and efficiency of the library and information services that
supports the academic process. Therefore, the qualitative improvement of the
information services from the academic libraries has become a crucial facet in

developments, the emergence of new disciplines at a very rapid pace, the
exponential volume of published literature, the non-traditional forms of
documents the limitation in the availability of resources, the ever-increasing
rise in the cost of documents, the changing concepts in the philosophy of
library and information services, the evolution of information intense academic
environment etc. throws challenges tithe development of our academic libraries.
These challenges are consequently leading to the requirement for more literature
that shed light on minute aspects of academic library development. Academic
library development is the first book under the series perspectives in academic
librarianship ' and is intended to cover diverse aspects of library and
information services in academic institutions, emphasizing the situation in
India and other third world countries. This collection is certainly an
embodiment of creative thinking of well-know specialists in the field of
academic librarianship in India and abroad.

M.N. Ramakrishnan (M.A. M. Lib. Sc.) is in the library & information profession for the past three decades in many crucial positions such as Chief Librarian of Asmara University of Ethiopia, Librarian of Calicut University and Professor & Head. Department of Library & Information science. University of Kerala. He was the founder president of Academy of Library & Information Services, Thiruvananthapuram and edited its Journal ALIS BULLETIN. K. Rajasekharan (M. A. L.L. B., M. Lib. Sc.) is a library & information scientist belonging to Kerala Agricultural University. He has written extensively on library science and has been increasingly active in the development of librarianship. He held the position of General Secretary of Academy of Library & Information Services for a few years and is now the President of Kerala academic Librarians Association.
R. Raman Nair, a post graduate in both history and Library & Information Science, is a senior college librarian. He had published numerous library science papers, literary articles and translations. He has been actively involving in library development activities and new holds the position of General Secretary of Kerala Academic Librarians Association.
