Many libraries currently have a book selection which contains principles
applicable to non-book materials. However, to realistically cover all media
included in the collection of the resource center, revision and expansion of an
existing policy or adoption of a new one is essential. For both protection and
guidance the statement of policy governing selection must have the sanction of
the administration of the institution and of its official controlling body.
Perusal of officially adopted statements of other libraries will facilitate the
preparation of materials selection policies. These may be general or specific in
their coverage. As a rule, they clarify the philosophy and objectives of
materials selection and identify both the legal, official entity and the
personnel responsible selection and identify criteria for evaluation.
