Digital Library Basics: A Practical Manual is meant for researchers and librarians who want to digitize their paper documents and build up digital collections and organize them and make them accessible through Internet.
Personal e-document collections developed by the researcher during literature search/research are to be managed by them in a retrievable way. Collections of published papers resulting from in-house research are to be organized with search, copying and retrieval/dissemination facilities by librarians. Software packages available for such function are complex systems, which require training to use and experts to configure.
This manual explains, without technical jargon, the methods for developing and managing Digital archives, Digital Libraries and E-Document collections, making them accessible with search mechanisms over Intranet/Internet, and publishing them with search engine in CD-ROMs. This manual can help to create Digital Libraries/Archives of full text, image, audio and video files, accessible over the Web using free software developed by UNESCO. The CDROM provided with the book includes all software, manual, and materials required for practice.
