Digital Technologies are making inroads into the system of education all over the world bringing information and education closer and closer day by day. As a result more and more educational institutions are being transformed into virtual campuses. Digital libraries are emerging as substitute to the traditional libraries with enhanced facilities at a lower cost. It may be said that the infrastructure does not exist suitably to be benefitted equally from the technology at present but a precedent may be taken of the expansion of computer in the same conditions. Once developed and connected, the digital libraries will supercede all the traditional libraries of today reducing them to merely the museums of books. The book presents a brief account of the changing international scenario of higher education as a result of the technological innovations and study the impact of digital technology on the libraries of some selected universities of USA, UK, Australia and India. It is also aimed at assessing the problems and prospects of digital libraries for the institutions of higher education. Dr. Amjad Ali (Ph. D. in Library and Information Science) started his service carer from Doordarshan (India Television) in 1982. A year later, he joined the prestigious Mass Communication Research Centre at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi as Librarian ( in charge of the Library Resource and Documentation Unit). He was also engaged as Academic Counselor with IGNOU. In 1993, he joined Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh as Deputy Librarian where he still continues. In the meanwhile, he has been on a foreign assignment as Information Specialist with King abdulaziz City for science and Technology, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He was also selected as Librarian (on panel ) for the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Presently, he is a Council Member of the India Library Association. Dr. Amjad Ali has published 20 books and a number of research papers. He is a recognized Guide for M. Phil and Ph. D. in Library and Information Science.
