Everyone, and specially the professionals, have to look back and take stock
of the past to critically analyse what was in the store for them and to
understand the future. In this book the author has attempted, in section one, to
consolidate the issue addressed to librarianship. The facets of professionalism
targeted include the elements, attributes, status, essentials, stages and other
aspects of professionalism in librarianship including censuring. The exercises,
aim at finding an answer to the oft- repeated question Is librarianship a
profession? A significant part of the life of professional and academic research
in librarianship revolves around the Ph.D. programmers. Section two analyses the
Ph.D. programmers in librarianship at different Indian Universities during the
last fifty years (1947-97). Professional commitments must not rset with the
profession only, but should extend to the institution, state, region and the
country they serve and live in. The range of Professional studies must
accomodate the issues concened with profession, institution, state, region,
country and the world. The exercises in exercises in section three are attempts
in that direction.
